Chef Claudia Fleming, co-owner of the renowned North Fork Table & Inn, was recently included in an Elle magazine list of the most influential women in food. The article refers to the James Beard Award-winning pastry chef as the “Goddess of New American Pastry” and includes a chart of other women in food she has influenced over the years. RELATED: NORTH FORK TABLE & INN HAS BEEN A LABOR OF LOVE FOR CHEFS “In 2013, Time magazine published a chart suggesting that all the influential chefs were men,” reads the introduction published on Elle.com. “But so many influential chefs, male and female, learned their craft from women like Mere Fillioux, Eugenie Brazier, Edna Lewis, Judy Rodgers, Madeleine Kamman, Claudia Fleming, Lidia Bastianich, Alice Waters—we could go on…and we do!” Fleming’s resumé includes years as pastry chef for Danny Meyer and Tom Colicchio’s Gramercy Tavern and the 2000 James Beard Award for outstanding pastry chef. Fleming, who owns the restaurant with husband Gerry Hayden and business partners Mike and Mary Mraz, can often be found serving up her famous chocolate chip cookies and other goodies (like the best egg sandies in town) in the back of a food truck frequently parked on the restaurant’s property.
